Dr. rer. nat. Torsten M. Runge

Diplom-Informatiker / Master of Science

I received my M.Sc. degree in Information Technology/Computer Science from the University of Rostock. Then I worked as a research scientist for Siemens AG, Corporate Technology and Deutsche Telekom AG, T-Systems where I participated in many international research projects. In this context, I designed and implemented many new and highly efficient solutions for telecommunications, telematics and industrial applications resulting in several patent applications and publications. I obtained my doctorate with honors from the University of Hamburg. In my doctoral thesis entitled "Model-based Performance Evaluation and Optimization of Multi-Core Architectures for Packet Processing in Communication Networks" (grade: summa cum laude), I developed a new modeling approach for the intra-node resource management in communication networks which I implemented and integrated as an open source module for the network simulator ns-3. Based on that, I proposed and implemented a new ingress QoS concept for Linux-based packet processing (e.g. software routers) to optimize the performance of latency-sensitive applications. My publications received multiple best paper awards on international conferences. I was awarded a one-year fellowship as a visiting postdoc researcher at the University of California, Berkeley in the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) as well as the Berkeley NetSys Lab. I was involved in EIT Digital for the transfer of scientific knowledge to industry to open up new application areas and business models. I was working as a Postdoc at the Institute of Communication Networks (ComNets) at Hamburg University of Technology. Currently, I am in the position of a Senior Architect for Edge Computing at Deutsche Telekom AG, T-Systems.

My research focuses on communication networks and computer systems which includes the interaction of networked, embedded, and distributed systems. I am a systems researcher and love to build real (software) prototype systems and conduct testbed experiments with them, but I also use modeling and simulation methods for performance evaluations of complex systems. In particular, I am interested in research and development of Cloud/Edge/Fog Computing, Serverless Computing, Software-Defined Networks (SDN), and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) with practical applications for Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Autonomous Systems.
